What is IPL Treatment and What Does It Treat?

IPL Treatment San Diego at Siti Med Spa

When is the last time you left the house without makeup? Has it been longer than you can remember? Ask yourself why. If the answer is that you’re self-conscious about sun spots, rosacea, freckles, or other skin discoloration issues, then IPL treatment might be just what you need to feel good about the skin you’re in.

What is IPL treatment?

Intense pulsed light (IPL), also known as IPL photofacial, is a quick, non-invasive procedure that delivers pulses of broad-spectrum light into the deeper layers of skin. The broadband light source and filters allow for the selective treatment of a variety of skin conditions caused by genetics, environmental factors, and the aging process. Cosmetic and medical practitioners use IPL technology to target a range of blemishes and imperfections, rejuvenating the skin and restoring its youthful radiance and texture.

What conditions is IPL photofacial good for?

IPL photofacial is a great option for treating hyperpigmentation, sun damage, redness, visible capillaries, acne, and fine lines and wrinkles. Siti Med Spa in San Diego offers the Limelight IPL Photofacial. The range and frequency of the light can be adjusted and controlled to address each particular concern. Here’s how it works:

  • Pigmentation issues

IPL photofacial is the best treatment for pigmentation issues. The light rays target pigment cells, breaking them up and dispersing them, effectively eliminating sunspots, freckles, age spots, and other pigment imperfections.

  • Rosacea

IPL treatment for rosacea targets the dilated blood vessels beneath the skin that cause redness. The heat collapses the blood vessels, and the blood is redirected through healthier veins. Over time, the body flushes out the damaged blood vessels, diminishing redness and improving the skin’s texture.

  • Spider veins and broken capillaries on the face

Like rosacea, spider veins are caused by capillary inflammation. IPL targets the enlarged blood vessels, eliminating facial veins and resulting in smooth, radiant skin.

  • Acne breakouts and acne scars

IPL treatment for acne works for both breakouts and scars. The laser light destroys acne-causing bacteria in the skin that cause inflammation and contribute to acne breakouts. The IPL treatment can also reduce the appearance of dark or red acne scars by breaking up the pigment and evening out skin tone.

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

The heat energy from the IPL treatment stimulates the growth of new collagen, resulting in smaller pores, and tighter, smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

IPL photofacial isn’t just for the face. It can be used to treat the skin on the chest, neck, and the backs of the hands as well.

What to expect during IPL treatment

Once you’re settled in comfortably, we’ll thoroughly cleanse your skin and apply a cool gel to the treatment area. Next, your practitioner will glide the laser strategically around the target area.  You’ll feel quick pulses of heat and a sensation that some patients describe as similar to the feeling of a rubber band snapping. The procedure takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area and the skin condition being treated.

You may experience a sunburn-like flush for a few hours after your IPL treatment, and some brown spots may appear darker at first, but they’ll fade within a few days. You are free to apply makeup immediately after your procedure, and you can go right back to your daily routine.

Some people see results from a single IPL session.  Others require two to six treatments (spaced at least one month apart) to see optimal results.  You’ll begin to see results from your IPL photofacial within a few weeks, and they’ll continue to improve for up to three months after the treatment session. For long-lasting results, it’s important to maintain a healthy skincare routine and wear sunscreen consistently. Many people opt for annual maintenance sessions to keep their skin looking smooth, radiant, and youthful.
