Preventing Dry Skin in the Winter

Keep your skin healthy and beautiful this season with our tips

Winter. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? What could be better than a fun-filled season consisting of family time, non-stop holidays, and adventurous vacations? It’s hard to find something wrong with this enjoyable time of year, however there is one obvious downside to the season. Dryness.

We’re sure at this point, you’re very familiar with the negative effects that winter has on your skin. No matter what you do, you always seem to have chapped lips, cracked hands and dry, damaged skin.

Fortunately for you, there are some simple tricks that you can do to get rid of or at least significantly improve your dry, winter skin.

#1 Moisturize

You may have heard that moisturizing is the solution to any and all of your skin’s problems. Well, that’s because it’s true. You should always be moisturizing your skin for many different reasons, but this is particularly true during the winter season. However, the moisturizer you use in the spring and summer seasons may not be the best fit for you in the winter. Make sure to choose a product that is right for the type of skin you have. Apply your moisturizer as soon as you get out of the bath or shower to make sure to trap the needed water.

#2 Invest in a Humidifier

It’s cold in the winter and your first instinct may be to get home and immediately blast the heater to warm up the place. While your warm, toasty apartment may seem like this was a good idea, heaters play a big role in dry winter skin because of the hot and dry air they blast throughout your home. Instead, try investing in a humidifier. They put moisture back in the air and help to prevent your skin from drying out.

#3 Avoid Long, Hot Showers

Taking a long, hot bath or shower can feel great after spending time out in the freezing cold. But, showering in hot water can actually dry out your skin. The heated water temperature removes the natural oils from your skin. If you do decide that you need a scorching hot shower, try significantly reducing the amount of time you spend bathing.

#4 Always Carry Chapstick

Applying lipsticks or glosses can end up drying out your lips, leaving them cracked and damaged. Instead, try replacing them with a soothing lip ointment or butter. If you don’t have any of these handy, refrain from licking your lips. This may feel good temporarily, but it ends up doing more damage in the long run. Also, if you feel that you must wear some sort of lipstick, apply the lip ointment or chapstick before you apply your lipstick.
