As a tattoo shop owner, you know that people change their minds about their tattoos all of the time. For one reason or another, you probably get at least a handful of clients who come to your shop each week hoping you can turn their old ink into a new tattoo that better suits their current taste – or relationship.
While your artists undoubtedly have the talent and skill to cover up an existing tattoo, there are several factors at play that can affect the end result. If the existing tattoo is particularly dark or has bled over the years, layering another tattoo on top of it can end up looking more like a Rorschach inkblot than a detailed work of art.
One thing that can help your artists create cover-up tattoos your clients are truly happy with is laser tattoo removal. By fading the darkest or most troublesome areas of a tattoo, your artists are no longer constrained by existing pigment in the skin. This gives them a lot more freedom in what they can create and provides a better overall result for the client.
How does laser tattoo removal work?
When a client wants his or her tattoo faded or removed, we target the area with a high-intensity light beam. The laser penetrates the skin and breaks up the pigment colors of the tattoos. The broken-down ink is then fought off by the immune system, mimicking and expediting the natural fading process that time or sun exposure would create. The laser energy only targets pigmented skin, leaving the surrounding, un-inked tissue unharmed.
What laser tattoo removal system do you use?
At Siti Med Spa, we’ve found that the enlighten™ laser is the most effective tool for tattoo removal. It’s one of the only picosecond lasers on the market, and represents the first major breakthrough in laser technology in the last 20 years. The enlighten™ laser has two wavelengths (532nm and 1064nm), a broad range of spot-size selection, and is the only laser in its class to offer longer and shorter pulse durations to precisely target large and small ink deposits in the skin. Using a picosecond laser means that fewer treatments are typically required, and the sessions are much more effective. With less time spent removing old ink, you can schedule your clients’ tattoo cover-up appointments a lot sooner.
Is laser tattoo removal really necessary for a cover-up?
We get this question a lot – and you probably do, too. The answer varies on a case-by-case basis. Whether a client needs laser tattoo removal before a cover-up really depends on the ink density of the existing tattoo and how compatible it is with the new design the client wants. In most cases, we find that laser tattoo removal is necessary to achieve the well-executed, detailed tattoo desired.
How many removal sessions are required?
The number of removal sessions is different for everyone, but most clients need between three and six rounds of treatment with the enlighten™ laser before they can schedule their tattoo cover-up. Clients should keep in mind that there is a 90-day healing period between treatments, and their skin needs time to repair itself before its ready for new ink.
Give your clients the results they deserve
Once considered a permanent and irreversible form of self-expression, tattoos can now be faded or even removed completely to provide a workable canvas for future designs. If you regularly get clients who come to your shop asking for detailed tattoo cover-ups, send them to us first.
At Siti Med Spa in San Diego, we use the enlighten™ laser to safely and efficiently break down the ink particles in tattoos to remove as much pigment as possible. Once our work is finished, your artists have the freedom to apply their creative touch and maintain the high level of workmanship your shop is known for.
