What to Know About Laser Tattoo Removal

You were young.  Maybe you were in love and believed the relationship would last forever.  Or maybe you were really into fire-breathing dragons and thought that would last forever, too. Either way, we get it. Now that you’ve changed, you’re ready to say goodbye to that old tattoo.

You’re not alone. The American Society of Dermatologic Surgery estimated that its members/practitioners did 96,000 tattoo removal procedures in 2013. That’s 52% more than in 2012. The number continues to rise.

One reason for this rise in tattoo removal is that, while the old methods often left unsightly scars in place of the unwanted tattoos, the technology for tattoo removal has improved dramatically. Today, it is possible to have your tattoo removed completely – and with no scarring!

What to expect from laser tattoo removal

The first thing most people want to know about tattoo removal is how long it will take.  This is not a question we can answer over the phone or in a blog post.  It’s different for each person and depends in part on the ink used. As a general rule, black and blue inks respond most quickly to the laser removal treatments. Yellow and green pigments are the most difficult to remove. The color of your skin, the depth of the ink, and the location of your tattoo will also affect the number of treatments you’ll need. And of course, size matters as well.

If you schedule a consultation at Siti Med Spa in San Diego, we can sit down with you and take a look at the tattoo(s) you want to remove.  At that point, we’ll be able to give you a clearer estimate on how many treatments you’ll need.

The other question we get a lot is why the tattoo removal process does not happen in one sitting. Our first answer to that one is: You wouldn’t want it to. Some have compared the feeling of laser tattoo removal to that of having your skin snapped with a rubber band or hit with specks of hot grease spatter. Although most people don’t require even topical anesthesia, tattoo removal is not something you’d want to do all day. In addition, it’s important to note that laser energy works by causing the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles, which are then absorbed by your body’s immune system. So it’s best to do it a bit at a time and allow your body to heal. At Siti Med Spa, we ask that you wait 90 days between treatments. Most tattoos require between 3 and 6 visits for complete removal.

At the end of each treatment, you may experience some redness or swelling, but these side effects will be temporary. You’ll be able to return to your regular activities immediately after each procedure. Be sure to follow post-procedure recommendations, which may include antibacterial ointments and sunblock on the treatment area.

You’ve come to the right place!

If you’ve been thinking about removing an old tattoo, now is a great time to do it. And you’ve come to the right place. At Siti Med Spa in San Diego, you’ll be amazed to see what we can do with the Cutera Enlighten Laser

Enlighten is the world’s first and only dual wavelength and dual pulse duration laser system. This safe and highly effective tattoo removal technology features a high intensity light beam designed to quickly break down the ink particles in your tattoo using picosecond pulses.

“What’s a picosecond?” you ask.

A picosecond is one-trillionth of a second. This is an important distinction to note because it’s 1,000 times shorter than the nanosecond pulses used in traditional laser tattoo removal.

What this means for you is that we can remove your tattoo more completely and in fewer treatments than was ever possible before. Sound good? We thought so.
